How Time Flies By: Liberty Adams

November 25, 2019 - 2019: Operation Parivar

Today was the last time teaching English in the schools. Since we already taught the lessons provided by YMAD we taught our emergency lessons which we designed in our subject groups. My group came up with the idea to teach the kids about the world. Our emergency lessons have everything that would be in the lessons we previously taught. Which include a book, flashcards, and an activity for them to do. Our activity which we planned was to color a picture of the world, draw the continents with chalk, and play with a blow-up version of the world.

Our lessons weren’t forty minute sessions for the first three groups and then thirty minutes for the last two lessons. All our lessons were 30 minutes long, only because we had more things that we needed to do in the school today than what we normally do on a regular school day. Out of our $3,900 which we had to fundraise in the 10 months we were preparing for India we got new shoes and sweaters for every kids who goes to the school. Some of the money also went to things the teachers thought were needed in the school. Our teachers at Bandal said that they wanted a Bluetooth speaker to hook up their phones to it for music, along with two musical instruments. Those two instruments were a drum and an “accordion piano”. The accordion piano is kind of hard to describe so I’ll explain it when I get back to Utah.

Time has flown super fast this trip and we only have about 4 days till we leave India because on Friday the 29th we are driving all day. Tomorrow is the last day we will be driving up the Himalayan Mountains to get to our schools. Tomorrow is only half of a day since we are reviewing all that we taught the kids, giving the kids hygiene kits, blankets, and gloves.

I can’t wait to go to Manali to shop and do the longest zipline in India. Apparently, it’s supposed to colder in Manali than it is in Kullu, so I’m in for a treat. Only because I am not a fan of cold weather. I have thought about the letters my family has written to me. Allison and Ashley gave everyone the  letters that were sent with them yesterday after we all said what we are grateful for. I’m not one to cry, but I did cry as I read the letters from my wonderful family. It’ll be nice to be home with running water and actual showers with lots of hot water. Not excited to get back in the school groove, but it’ll be nice to see my friends and family after two long weeks.

The food here is unbelieve, I won’t be eating rice for a while since that’s all I have eaten since I’ve been in India. I can’t wait to have American food. I will miss the four packages of cookies that I eat during lunch, but I heard from Ashley that there is an Indian Market in Salt Lake City, so I’m planning on going there when I get home to get more of the cookies which I love way too much.
