Kids

I want to start off by saying that my previous blog was, to put it simply, straight-up trash. That wasn’t a super great night for me, and my brain was completely fried by the time I wrote it. So, I’m glad I’m at least enough sanity to actually make sentences.

It’s hard to figure out what to talk about, so I’ll go with the first thing on my mind: the kids. I love the kids at my school in Dansa. It took me three days to memorize all 27 of their names, but it’s pretty sweet now that I’ve gotten it. What’s crazy about being with these guys is that despite the age difference and language barrier, they don’t feel like just a bunch of kids I’m teaching. They feel like I’ve known them for a long time, like they’re my best friends (well, except for when they slap me, or slap each other  over my attention, or tackle me from behind with no warning, or whine at me for something more fun than I can offer…). I freaking love these little punks.

Teaching can be such a challenge, but I’m so grateful to be spending time with them. I love the mix of personalities and capability, even when they make it hard. We’ve got kids all the way from a three-year-old who eats markers to a nine-year-old who constantly wants to kiss me, to a six-year-old who can read well and write in beautiful cursive. My fifteen-year-old brother can’t even read and write cursive, and here’s a six-year-old girl in the freaking Himalayas who’s got it on him.

I’m also amazed by how resilient these kids are. Nothing phases them. If they get hurt and cry, they cry for two seconds until they feel better. If the playground ball we’re playing with goes over the edge of the cliff, they just climb down fifty feet and bring it back up. I love to be with these guys. I don’t want to leave them, ever. I’m looking forward to the next time I teach them.
