Day 1-4 Calvin Stirling

November 18, 2019 - 2019: Operation Parivar

We made it!! After three fights and thousands of miles, I finally got to sleep in a bed again. The travel overall was pretty smooth. We didn’t miss any flights, and, by some miracle, all our bags arrived in Deli. The bus ride was the hardest part of the adventure for me personally because I was so exhausted, and I kept falling asleep throughout the night after.

Monday was our first day at the school, and I think we were all happy to finally meet the kids and use the lessons we had been practicing for almost a year. The preparation ended up paying off as the lessons went by without a hitch. The kids were almost as excited to see us as we were to see them. The kids were so excited to hear what we had to teach them, and it was a great experience. We had one of the smallest schools which ended up being great because I got to meet all the kids and learn most of their names in one day. My lesson was on construction and the kids enjoyed it, but had a bit of a struggle understanding a few of the objects like wheel barrow and ladder.

After the school day we went to the market to buy our fabrics and clothes. The boys got another chance to experience the driving which can only be described as crazy. The drivers do an excellent job of navigating the seemingly lawless streets. After navigating the crowded narrow roads, the boys arrived at the store where we purchased our traditional garb. Mine ended up costing one thousand rupees which is under fifteen dollars. Overall, it was a great first day and I can’t wait for tomorrow!!
