India is Real (Ethan Hopkins)

I’ll get the boring stuff out of the way first; the food is good, we all got here safely and relatively comfortably, I have only thrown up once, and have not needed an enema yet.

As my first time out of the country, it has been incredible to see how people live here and to witness an unknown culture firsthand.  I have been fortunate to have some prior knowledge of India and it’s customs, and access to our leaders who can explain what it is we are seeing around us.  Only two days in, and India has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.  I have never seen kids that are so happy despite having problems that we cannot even imagine in Utah.  They all have a genuine love of life and want nothing more than to be recognized.

Everything about India is real.  While there is certainly more security and safety in our homes it has been a refreshing experience to get away from my bubble in Holladay Utah with a sheltered school full of fake people.  This is how it really is in most of the world and it is important to be aware of it.

While the first day teaching the kids was rough, I feel like today was more successful, because we knew the kids and knew what to expect.  They are always loving and ready to learn, and James, Jesse, Lauren, Kenna, Sierra, Madeline, Amy and I love to teach them.  I’m looking forward to the rest of our time with these wonderful children and time in this amazing land.

P.S.  To my parents; if you can cover the halfpipe if it hasn’t already snowed, send a link to this blog to Mr. Florence, and pay the parking ticket I got the day before we left that would be nice.  And mom I’m completely covered in lice and scabies in case that’s something you were thinking about.
