NAOMI By Lilly Randall

NAOMI

3 plane rides, 6 movies, 8 naps, 9 airplane meals, and 52 hours later we arrived in the sleeping town of Kullu. I woke up with Dominos pizza in my mouth, that I had apparently fallen asleep while eating, as the bus drove right by the river. We transferred from a bus into cars and drove to our hotel, Hotel Vikrant. Everything was pitch black except the scattered porch lights of the houses that scale the mountains, I almost mistook them for stars. This was my first impression and honestly after that I don’t remember anything from the first night.

My next memory was Ashley waking me up with a knock on the door. I slept like a rock the first night in India so it was super hard to open my eyes and climb out of my cacoonish sleeping bag into our cold room (we accidentally left the window open the night before), but I finally did right before I stumbled down stairs to breakfast. We had curried eggs which reminded me of green eggs and ham… but that’s besides the point because they were delicious! After breakfast we hopped on the bus to drive to our schools. The drive was narrow to say the least but soooooo beautiful! The drive starts by driving in the valley past teal, red, and yellow houses. Gradually, the bus climbs up the mountains until you’re looking at the houses from a birds eye view. My group, the red team, hops off the bus at the second stop and weaves through houses as we climb up the village steps to our school. Everyday we walk past a really cute baby brown cow that we named Naomi.

The little kids are absolutely adorable! They’re so tiny and energetic and happy all the time. They’re smiles are the happiest thing ever. This little 5-year-old boy named Aajeet always gets the cutest smile with the deepest dimples when you look at him. All the kids love copying you especially this 8-year-old boy named Dinesh. He is so funny. If you put your hands on your hips or point to something, they do too. It always makes me laugh so hard. India is so fun, I love it!
