This trip has turned out to be better than I thought it would in almost every way possible. There was only one guard at the airport with an assault rifle, and I don’t think I have lice. I have discovered a new love for coconut, which I get more than enough of in my village thanks to several boys. The food is spectacular, and instead of a menu we all know that it’ll be chicken for dinner by the blood on the stairs from the bag the poultry is transported in. The cold showers are refreshing and allow for pleasant conversation with whomever is showering next to you.
However what really has made this expedition such a huge success is the time we have had to spend with girls in the Day Boarding School and with the village kids. They have such an amazing capacity for love, even for someone who doesn’t speak the same language as they do. We all have our favorite kids, who we would do anything for. They each have such unique personalities. I can’t help but to think of the homes they live in and the families they come from. On the village tours we visit the homes of several of the children we teach, where we sit down in the one room big enough to accommodate a dozen people. Everything is cooked on a tiny little mud oven, and given to us to eat. These people have no reason to enjoy life, at least by our standards. And yet they could not possibly want more.
I can’t wait to see what happens next, and when it happens, I can’t wait to see how it changes my life.
