Salutations to everyone back home! by:Devin Vander Toolen

Salutations to everyone back home! This is Devin Vander Toolen from the Dugielug village team. Today went exceedingly well. Most of our lessons today were very hands-on, something I’m certain the kids were thrilled about. My own lesson was “Conversations”. For this lesson, the kids created paper bag puppets that they then acted out conversations with.

As our game today, we played with the Jenga blocks we prepared last night. As first, we broke the game into two smaller groups as we were worried they would get bored waiting their turn. Our worries were for naught. Once the tower started to wiggled, everyone sat in anticipation for its fall.
During lunch, Anew (our translator) caught a spider with us. Brad was less enthusiastic, like, actively going into another room and refusing to go anywhere near it levels of unenthusiastic.
At 7:00 P.M., we rode in rickshaws to a restaurant. I don’t have a picture of a rickshaw, but they’re like wide motorcycles with a rectangular shell over them. Similar to a west coaster, but bigger.
The food at the restaurant was good. I appreciated their take on pizza with Indian spices. The view though was stunning. We have a pretty good view from our hostel, but they’re much closer river.
That’s all from me. Until the next set of blogs tomorrow, good night/morning.

  1. Oh My Gosh! that spider is HUGE! That spider would have me running for the hills for sure. That is so crazy!

  2. Devin,
I sympathize with Brad; that is a couple of ginormous spiders! Yikes!
You look like you are in your element with those kiddos. I especially love all the mustaches on the boys’ puppets!

  3. Hello Devin!,

It is so good to hear from you! That spider is enormous! I think I would be leaving the room as well. We have been following the blogs and enjoy reading all that is shared and all the pictures. I am so glad that the children have been so happy to do the lessons and enjoy having all you teens there. We are excited to talk to you tomorrow. Olivia wants to know what type of spider it was. Love you mom

  4. Congrats on scoring pizza. 😊

  5. Love the pics and the info.
The games, lessons and interactions with the kids looks amazing.
